Keep It Simple!!!
There is a song called 'Lemon Tree' by a band called Fool's Garden and i'm not talking about the song by kinston trio. The beauty of the song in my personal opinion lies in its simplicity. Lyrics go like ' I'm sitting here in a boring room,It's just another rainy sunday afternoon.I'm wasting my time, I got nothing to do.I'm hanging around, I'm waiting for you,But nothing ever happens - and I wonder.' You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand this. But what adds the flavour to these words are the arrangement and the tune. I am not trying to analyse the song but what i am trying to say really is that songs which are simple to ear strike us most, to me atleast. By simple i mean songs which are simple to listen to, like lets say Till There Was You by The Beatles (their cover version), the arrangement in my opinion is not at all simple but when you listen to it, it flows smoothly and gently sets you in the mood.
Now lets take songs by Dream Theatre into consideration. When you listen to them you can immediatly sense how complicated the whole structure is. How all the individual players in the band are playing to their level best wtihout comprising at all. Individually, undoubtedly, they sound brilliant because of their technical superiority but as a band, to me, they sound like noise.
Most metal bands also have this habit of overplaying and making music complicated by putting too much technicality into it and loosing the essence of the song amidst all of it.
So, i think, songs which are actually number one are the ones which are simple to the ear, smooth flowing, rhythmical and has a punch. Rock 'n roll, classic rock i thnink are two genres where songs are simple to hear, makes a point whether dealing with political issues or emotional wreckage. Alternative is another genre which has come up in last decade has that quality of simplicity. Life generally is too complicated for words and if songs follow the same trend its damm frustrating!!!!! So I SAY ... KEEP IT SIMPLE !
PS. I would also like to say that rock n roll and classic rock being my personal favourite i mentioned it that way... but i think simplicity in songs is genre free !

classic and glam rules as usual my good friend. Anyway, I love LemonTree, picked it up a long time ago, possibly have forgotten it now.
hehe... lemon tree is fun. i don't like heavy-on-technicals stuff either, but don't like songs too simple as well. have somehow got addicted to the sound of the guitar. oi'ta na thakley gaan'ta kemon jeno kaan'er pash diye beriye jay. lol. classic rock is of course...well, classic.
dunno bout dream theatre,havent heard them,but i totally concur with you on the simplicity issue...thats why the beatles still rock!!
i mean a song like 'its only love' says so much...SO much...and its very simple in terms of both its lyrics and melody...(of course when its sung by the beatles,not recited randomly...!!!)
i guess u gotta give it to all genre`s..each has its numero uno..i think i know ppl to whom kreator,paradies lost,arch enemy, after forever et cetra sounds amazingly melodious and SIMPLE..they can actually relax over it! so its the whole MUSIC IS SUBJECTIVE issue bit..but yeah..i know how much u love lemon tree..good one!
Beatle's are really nothing as oppossed to the Rolling Stones. if i had lived in the 60s I would have been a Deadhead or a Stoner rather than an insect.
i'm a deadhead and a stoner too... but if the beatles had not come then stones and dead wouldn't have been there.. and this is not just me but jagger said it himself....

Don't agree. I think complexity through simplicity is what you are aiming at glue. If you look at The Beatles, Floyd, Zep in fact almost everything that sounds good to you, you'll find out that the complexity might be structural but the final product sounds very simple. I'll give you an example. What about "Yesterday"? It sounds damn easy...and now look at the chord structure! In fact look at any Police number. Thus to mu understanding, it is only apparent simplicity which you seem to like rather than actual simplicity.
Not "I think complexity through simplicity", actually "simplicity through complexity". Sorry about that :P
a grand THANK YOU to "the-freaky-chakra" for giving orpheus a brilliant review of their show...its critics like these that help amateur bands to grow into rock gods..so..thanks mr.whoever-u-r!

Well people think that God made religion And religion made the present man.
The man that kills each other for religion.
But they do not realise that man made religion to justify himself supernatural occurings and Coincidences.
And that made God.
Slowly these supernatural occurings Become natural by science and logic.
Still people fail to understand that they made God.And its not the other way round.
i wonder when i wonder how ... something something something about the blue blue sky and all that i can see is just a yellow lemon tree
